I had two serious girlfriends during those years. The first one dumped me for somebody else, but we remained friends for a few more years. The other wanted to get married and have children and I wanted to go to college. We both got our wish eventually but separately. That break up hurt, I was in love.

The girl I wanted the most since the 5th grade I never really got a chance with, but we have been and still are friends.
